Richard Hackney Obituary

Richard Clarence (Dick) Hackney, of Allen, Texas, went to be with the Lord on March 23, 2023 at the age of 82. He was born on October 23, 1940, in Cazenovia, New York to Ernest Hackney and Marion Burke. He was the second of five children and loved serving as a big brother to his sisters. He graduated from Cazenovia High School and soon after moved to Texas.

Dick entered the Air Force in March of 1960 and spent three and a half years serving in the armed forces, including time in Germany. After he was honorably discharged he went back to Texas and met the love of his life. He married Sandra Lynn (Ray) Hackney on August 6, 1966 and together they spent 55 glorious years as husband and wife. They loved each other well and created a tight knit family with their three children: Michelle, Melissa and Mark.

Once back in Texas, Dick began a one year management program with JC Penney, which led to a long and successful career as a retail manager.  This career path took Dick and his family from Texas to Kansas and finally to Oklahoma, where he continued to advance by overseeing larger stores. Dick received many accolades, but the pinnacle of his 33 year career was opening the JCPenney store at the Shawnee Mall. He was so proud of his team and his contribution to designing such a large store from the ground up.

Throughout his life, Dick enjoyed many outdoor pastimes. His first love was fishing, and he shared that love with his children and grandchildren.  Once he retired, his love for golf grew and for many years he could be found nearly every day at the Elks Lodge. Dick enjoyed watching any and all sports, but his favorite was football and he rarely missed watching the Dallas Cowboys or OU Sooners play.

Dick was fun-loving and friendly, and never missed a chance to meet people or say hello. He was often seen as the life of the party, and many witnessed him dancing when given the opportunity.  Dick always loved listening to music, and could often be heard whistling to one of his favorites songs.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Sandy. He is survived by his children: Michelle and Steve Wallace of Shawnee, Oklahoma; Melissa and Brian Warden of Chandler, Arizona and Mark and Cristina Hackney of Prosper, Texas. He was the proud Papa to Morgan and Emma Wallace, Haylee and Hayes Hackney, and Alyssa, Kai and Noah Warden.
